Following a few simple charging habits can help maximize the performance, safety and lifespan of your lithium-ion e-bike battery.
Best practices for charging and storing e-bike batteries
Let the battery cool down before charging.
After a ride, especially a long ride, heavy throttle use or hill climbing, allow the battery to rest for approximately 20–30 minutes before plugging it in. Charging a battery while the cells are still hot adds additional heat and stress, which can accelerate battery degradation over time.
Connect your charger in the proper sequence.
Turn the bike off, connect the charger to the bike/battery first, then plug the charger into the wall outlet. When charging is complete, unplug the charger from the wall first, then disconnect it from the bike/battery. This helps reduce the possibility of arcing or sparking at the battery's charging connection. Always use the charger designed for your specific battery.
You don't need to run your battery completely empty before charging it.
Lithium-ion batteries actually prefer partial charge cycles. For everyday use, charging to approximately 80 - 90% when practical and avoiding leaving the battery deeply discharged for extended periods can help extend its overall lifespan. Charging to 100% when you need maximum range is perfectly fine - it simply doesn't need to be done every time.
If you aren't riding your e-bike, check and recharge the battery at least every 3 - 4 months.
E-bike batteries slowly lose charge even when they aren't being used. If a lithium-ion battery is allowed to remain unused long enough at a very low state of charge, the cells can become deeply discharged. The battery's management system may then shut the battery down to protect the cells, and in some cases the battery can be permanently damaged and may no longer accept a charge. For long-term storage, don't leave the battery completely full or empty – a good general target is approximately 60 – 80% charge. Store it partially charged and check its charge level every few months.
Bring your battery indoors during temperature extremes.
Whenever possible, store your battery in a clean, dry area at approximately 50 - 77°F (10 - 25°C) rather than leaving it in a freezing garage, hot vehicle or other extreme environment. Excessive heat can permanently accelerate battery degradation, while very cold temperatures reduce performance and can make charging unsafe. Some batteries will actually prevent charging when their internal temperature is too cold or too hot.
Never charge a battery that is below freezing.
If the battery has been exposed to freezing temperatures, bring it into a moderate-temperature environment and allow it to warm naturally before charging. Charging lithium-ion cells while they are extremely cold can damage them.
Don't leave the battery permanently connected to its charger.
Once charging is complete, disconnect the charger rather than using it as long-term battery storage. This reduces unnecessary time at a high state of charge and avoids keeping the charger energized indefinitely.
